Context

Rangpur, Bangladesh's northernmost division, is one of the country's most economically disadvantaged regions, with over 44% of households in extreme poverty. This area suffers from poor industrialization, low agricultural productivity, and frequent natural disasters, contributing to its persistent poverty. The educational sector in Rangpur faces severe challenges, including a shortage of qualified teachers, high student dropout rates, and significant learning losses exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite schools reopening, attendance and educational outcomes remain below pre-pandemic levels. Teach For Bangladesh (TFB) has identified the urgent need for improved educational access and quality in Rangpur, laying the groundwork for a targeted intervention to address these issues.

The project

In this partnership TFB will recruit, train, and place 34 Fellows in government primary schools over three-and-a-half years. These Fellows, selected from top university graduates and young professionals across Bangladesh, will undergo intensive training in pedagogical skills and leadership development. The initiative will focus on enhancing students' proficiency in reading, writing, and numeracy, while also promoting social-emotional growth. The project aims to directly benefit 5,800 children, with an additional 6,100 children and 23,000 community members indirectly impacted. Fellows will work closely with local schools, parents, and community leaders to foster a supportive and inclusive educational environment. The project will also leverage partnerships with EdTech companies to integrate technology into learning, ensuring a modern and effective educational experience.

Main Objectives

  1. Deliver Quality Education: Train and place promising young leaders as teaching Fellows in high-need government schools to deliver quality education.
  2. Improve Learning Outcomes: Advance grade-level proficiency in reading, writing, and numeracy for rural students while fostering their social-emotional growth.
  3. Foster Collective Leadership: Build long-term leadership among schools, government bodies, Fellows, and community members to ensure systemic improvements in education.
  4. Cultivate Lifelong Leadership: Develop Alumni as change agents who advocate for educational equity and continue to impact the education sector in rural Bangladesh.

This project represents a significant step towards closing the educational gap in Rangpur, empowering local communities, and creating a sustainable model for educational improvement in Bangladesh.
